When we think of auto glass, we usually just think of the windshield. But a vehicle is surrounded by different types of glass, each engineered for a specific safety purpose.
The Windshield (Laminated Glass)
Your windshield is made of laminated glass. This consists of two layers of glass with a strong, clear layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) plastic sandwiched between them. When a rock hits the windshield, it might chip or crack the outer layer of glass, but the plastic interlayer holds everything together, preventing the glass from shattering into the cabin.
Door and Back Glass (Tempered Glass)
The glass on your side doors and the back window is typically made of tempered glass. Tempered glass is heated and cooled rapidly during manufacturing to make it extremely strong. When it breaks, it is designed to shatter instantly into thousands of small, blunt pebble-like pieces rather than sharp, dangerous shards.
Vent and Quarter Glass
These are the small, often triangular windows located near the front or rear doors. They do not roll down. Because of their specific mounting and shape, replacing them requires particular care to ensure wind noise is eliminated.
